Construction - Perpendicular: point on line

To construct a perpendicular from a point on the line, draw a pair of arcs from that point to intersect the line in two places.

Using the two intersection points, complete the process for drawing a perpendicular to a line.

Example 1

Without using a protractor, draw a right-angled triangle with sides of length 8cm and 5 cm. Show all your construction lines.

Construct a perpendicular from a point on the line to obtain the right angle for the triangle.

Measure 5 cm up the perpendicular, and 8cm along the base line: join for the triangle.

Answer:

Construct a triangle using compasses and a ruler

Example 2

Using the construction from Example 1, above, draw a rectangle with sides 8cm and 5cm. Show all additional construction lines.

Repeat the construction of a perpendicular at the other end of the base line. Measure up for 5cm. Draw across to complete the rectangle.

Answer:

Construct a rectangle using compasses and a ruler
